2. Where does Ikat come from?

Many of us wonder where the word IKAT comes from and what it means.
This colorful term comes from Indonesian and means "to tie, to knot", reflecting the weaving technique.
First found in Asia and then South America, it first appeared in Europe in the 16th century.

This ancestral technique follows a complex process and know-how found only in a few Asian countries, notably India.
To obtain these brilliant colors, the yarn must be dyed upstream, which requires the craftsman to knot and compress the yarn before plunging it into a dye bath.
For each different color on a fabric, the same steps must be followed. Once the yarns have been dyed, the fabric is woven by hand on a loom.
It's thanks to all these steps, which require extreme meticulousness, that we obtain a fabric with vibrant, shimmering colors.
